Chapter 3-5: Hamburger and Side Dishes

“Instead of that, aren’t you hungry? Let’s eat hamburgers.”

Uta pointed up at the signboard above them.

The second floor of the building had been turned into a hamburger shop, and the escalator leading up to there could be seen from the road.

“Eeh… But I’m not really in the mood for hamburgers…”

The high school boy didn’t seem eager about the proposal.

Nevertheless, he followed after Uta.

“What should I get?”

“If you’re going, mister, I’m going too!”

“How about we go to the park and eat after we buy our stuff?”

“That sounds good. I don’t like overly crowded places, so outside is fine.”

In any case, it appeared that Uta had successfully distracted the small god.

“Haraedo, you’re coming too.”

“Me too…?! I guess it can’t be helped…”

The god who was dressed as in traditional Japanese looked confused, but he also followed along, playing the part of their guardian.

“I’ll have the big cheeseburger, chicken, fries, and~…”

Sukunabikona ordered one meal after another next to Uta who was opening his wallet.

“You’re eating quite a bit, huh. Is it because you’re still growing…?”

“…Eh? How old do you think I am?”

“Now that you mention it, you’ve grown a lot these several hundred years.”

Haraedo patted the small god’s head like one would to a child’s.

“Don’t make fun of me. …Ah, right. I guess I’ll order the limited-time chocolate pie too ~♪”

“Uta, just choose anything for me.”

“Okay.”

“And with as much meat as you can.”

“…Eh? Meat? Okay, I got it.”

(Since they sell hamburgers, there should be enough meat, right…?)

Both of the gods appeared to have calmed down enough to eat despite having been at each other’s throats and gearing up to start a war just before.

(I’m glad I brought them here.)

Just as Uta had started relaxing…

“Your total will be 4200 yen.”

“Eh?! Four thousand…?!”

He looked at the numbers displayed on the register and cried in his heart.

“Hey… gods won’t die if they don’t eat, right…?”

“That’s right.”

“Yeah.”

Haraedo and Sukunabikona answered at roughly the same time.

“Is that so…?”

However, Uta had invited them; he couldn’t complain.

(A necessary expense. This is a necessary expense…!)

Uta kept telling himself that. Next to him, the two gods were noisily chatting away.

“Ah, it’s our order. Here it comes! That’s a lot for three people.”

“And half of it is your stuff…”

“Did you say something?”

“In the first place, didn’t you say you weren’t in the mood for hamburgers…?”

“I only ordered one hamburger! The rest are side dishes!”

“Uh-huh, side dishes. Sure.”

“Come on now. We’re disturbing the other customers. Let’s go.”

Uta grabbed several bags and urged the two to leave the shop.

After that, they secured a table at the park next to the station building, and the three opened up the paper bags.

“Housou-san could have joined us…”

When Uta recalled and suddenly said this, Haraedo replied.

“Come to think of it, that guy is always lounging about on some random bench, drinking…”

While he may have run away to avoid Sukunabikona-no-kami, Housou-no-kami was nowhere to be seen in his usual area by the station square.

“What? Do you like him, mister? That kind of man has absolutely no good qualities.”

Sukunabikona curled his ketchup-stained lips into a smirk.

“Yeah, that guy really isn’t helpful to anyone.”

Haraedo agreed as he sank his teeth into the hamburger.

“Well, you’re not any better, Haraedo.”

“Shut up.”

Uta didn’t know if these gods were close or not. Haraedo retorted while pushing a napkin with his elbow across the table towards Sukunabikona.

(Can gods be useless?)

Even amongst humans, deeming whether someone was useful or not was only a part of an evaluation. Although, there were relationships that went beyond weighing this factor.

“Can’t I be with someone just because I like them…?”

When Uta absentmindedly muttered this, the two on the other side of the table, froze at the same time.

“…Eh?”

“Why Housou-no-kami? You’re insane…”

Sukunabikona was slightly taken aback.

“Sorry, just now… my heart can’t accept that as fact…”

Haraedo seemed to have choked on his hamburger as tears formed in his eyes.

“No, it’s not like that… I mean, I do like Housou-san, but I was just stating a general opinion before. It’s not like I feel anything special towards him.”

The conversation appeared to have turned complicated.

“I like everyone.”

After Uta ended with those words, booing came from the other side of the table.

“You sure are a sinful man!”

“I don’t want to be seen in the same light as everyone!!!”

Gods were beings who naturally desired human favor.

In any case, Uta decided that he would stop saying unnecessary things from now on.

After they finished their meal, Sukunabikona-no-kami left to go to the bathroom, and this happened.

“Hey, listen, Uta…”

Haraedo slightly hesitated before opening his mouth.

“Leaving the matter of Housou aside, Sukunabikona is a powerful god despite his appearance.”

“Yeah, and…?”

“Not just business but also agriculture, sake brewing, and medicine… I’ve forgotten how many, but he has bestowed his blessings to different people.”

“Is that so?”

Uta thought that this was amazing, but he couldn’t figure out what Haraedo was trying to say.

He didn’t understand and asked, prompting Haraedo to continue.

“In other words, if you worship that guy, your shop will definitely become profitable.”

“Profitable, huh…”

Uta recalled the numbers in the ledger.

“That sounds like a good idea, but… how can I put it…?”

“……?”

“I feel like it’ll be wrong to make a profit if I have to go that far, and I rather enjoy discussing details and devising plans about my unprofitable shop with Min-kun. I also feel delighted that you come over to drink coffee. That’s why…”

“That’s why what?”

Haraedo looked on with his deep-colored, narrow eyes, and Uta was suddenly hit with the realization of his feelings.

“I have no other god but you, Haraedo.”

“Uta…”

Uta locked eyes with Haraedo who lightly breathed out.

Uta wanted to touch him but realized that his hands were busy holding his hamburger.

When he realized this, he felt their toes touch underneath the table.

(Ah…)

“I really want to embrace you right now.”

Haraedo said with a sigh; his hands also busy holding his hamburger.

Humburger priority.

But I will be the same, even though i am at an emotional state and want to hug, my hamburger is still the priority.
