Chapter 4-4: Eradicating Housou

“…Eh? What do you mean by ‘eradicate’?”

Uta tilted his neck as he wiped the chair with alcohol.

He hadn’t seen Housou-no-kami ever since then, so suddenly hearing that he would be eradicated didn’t click in his head.

“More importantly, Sukunabikona-san, you can’t sit in that seat.”

The chair the small god was reaching for had an X-mark placed on the seat.

“Because of the recent pandemic, the health department has told us to be thorough with our precautions…”

That was why he was in the middle of disinfecting the store interior.

The store only had a counter, so once half of the seats were marked with X’s, only 3-4 customers could enter.

The store was never really crowded, so this led to them being open to no one.

Sungmin said from the side.

“Before you eradicate him, please collect the credit he owes us. You know where he is, right?! If we can’t get what we can, then our store will really collapse!”

Uta couldn’t deny that fact.

Regardless, Sukunabikona-no-kami looked at the two with an exasperated face.

“Listen here. Whose fault do you think this is?!”

“Eh…?”

“Haraedo didn’t tell you? All of it is Housou-no-kami’s fault! He came back with a bunch of disease gods! That guy has made a huge mess of our city.”

“Eh…?!”

Sungmin gasped.

“That can’t be…”

Uta’s hand stopped.

“I mean, Sukunabikona-san… Weren’t you the one who said that Housou-san was a weak god and couldn’t do anything? So, how did he…?”

Despite having asked Sukunabikona, Uta couldn’t comprehend what was being said.

The small god, bathing in Uta’s gaze, let out a deep sigh.

“I thought I had reduced his power to the lowest it could be. But, I was wrong… When I caught and questioned the disease gods who were rampaging through the city, they all mentioned his name.”

Then, it must be true…

Although this was too abrupt to take in, if the chaos surrounding the city was Housou-no-kami’s fault, then Uta was also at fault for having been sympathetic towards the god.

“Hey, Haraedo… d-did you know…?!”

Uta unintentionally asked Haraedo, who wasn’t present.

The sliding door that separated the store from his residence was open, revealing the household shrine housing Haraedo-no-kami.

“…Sorry, Uta…”

The voice didn’t come from inside the household shrine but from right beside Uta.

“Haraedo…”

The god stood there with a heartbroken expression.

“I knew that you trusted him, so I didn’t know how to tell you.”

“……”

Uta tightly gripped the god’s kimono sleeve.

“I truly am sorry.”

“I know…”

He couldn’t even finish saying, “because you’re kind.” Even now, Haraedo might still be pretending to not know anything about Housou-no-kami.

On the other hand, Sukunabikona was accompanied by the ruthlessness that came from being responsible for the city’s businesses.

“Sorry, mister, but I’m going to find and erase him for sure this time. I came here today to tell you that.”

He declared before leaving.

“Wait! I’m sure that Housou-san must have had his own reasons or circumstances.”

Sukunabikona was on his way out and turned around to look at Uta who was attempting to stop him.

“Even so, all’s fair in love and war.”

The god looked like a young boy, but he was utterly cruel.

“Then, do you intend to eradicate him without even talking?!”

“This will determine who lives and who dies.”

(Who lives and who dies—)

Uta’s hand, which was holding Haraedo’s sleeve, tensed and trembled.
