Chapter 065 – Fufufu, Son. Everything Was For This Moment [B]
“Let us put an end to this, brat!”
In an instant, power at the maximum level was charged into both arms of the giant machine——
“……………OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”
“Wha!”
The giant machine was hit from behind. It was forced to release the boy.
When he turned around, he saw Valimar, with a dark aura rising from its entire body, charging towards the giant machine.
“It can’t be! The activator is over here…… Could it be the remote operation that ‘C’ mentioned?!”
While the giant robot was taken aback by the autonomous Valimar, Rean, freed from his restraints, was filled with rage as he attacked the Panzer Soldat with Loa Valimar.
“Kuh!”
The Panzer Soldat dodged it instantly, and just when it seemed like he could avoid it, the white shadow’s blow managed to graze the Panzer Soldat’s body.
But the Panzer Soldat was forced to retreat back several arges. She learnt firsthand that this fist contained even more destructive power than the blow aimed at the giant robot earlier.
“This kid is bad news!”
While frantically countering Loa Valimar’s attack, the Panzer Soldat leapt into the air.
Naturally, Loa Valimar also chased after her and punched its fist in the air, but the Panzer Soldat kicked the air again.
Utilizing three-dimensional mobility, she got behind Loa Valimar and cut it down again with her Templar sword.
Although Loa Valimar’s body was cut off, Rean continued to move it, fueled by his rage.
Still, there were limits.
While Loa Valimar resorted to brute force with Rean’s rage, the Panzer Soldat calmly dealt with it with the Templar Sword.
Finally, Loa Valimar’s body disintegrated.
The cooldown for re-summoning hadn’t yet finished, and while the opponent was not as powerful, her weapon was a Templar Sword. The mechanism allowed her to close the gap between them to some extent.
But driven by rage, Rean ran toward the Panzer Soldier with his bare hands. No matter how much his body was strengthened by the power of ogre, if his bare body received a blow from Panzer Soldat, it would be lethal.
Osbon’s voice couldn’t reach him, and just when it seemed like that nothing could be done —— something came in between Rean and the Panzer Soldat.
“————————————Rean-san!”
“————————————————Eh?”
Rean’s reddish-black eyes dissolved back to their original color and calmness.
The constant flames of rage were quenched by that voice.
A girl appeared in Rean’s field of vision.
She threw a tachi in its black sheath at Rean.
To Rean, time seemed to have slowed down then, as if a time barrier had been shattered.
The Panzer Soldat brandished its Templar Sword.
Rean blocked it with his tachi and quickly drew it.
The blade was filled with a mysterious glow, as if it was made from a crystal and contained the Septium energy.
Rean naturally poured his power of ogre into it.
Holding the tachi, now saturated with the killing intent and rage that had been welling up inside him earlier, Rean stepped forward with firm strength.
Mind, technique, body —— Rean seemed to have reached a state where all of these had combined and his tachi was unleashed with a speed that the woman piloting the Panzer Soldat couldn’t even catch with her eyes.
“He’s go——”
“——Dream Gale.”
It was a combination of the Second Form and Seventh Form.
He avoided the approaching Templar sword with free-flowing movement, and the demon’s blade and the Eight Leaves’ technique sliced through the Panzer Soldat’s wrist.
But that was all Rean could do.
Rean had completely used up all his strength by cutting off the Panzer Soldat’s wrist and was about to collapse on the ground, only to be caught by a soft, warm sensation.
Taking one last look at the smiling face of the blonde girl wearing the familiar nun outfit, Rean slowly closed his eyes with a childlike smile.
*
The Ashen Knight descended beside the blonde girl ——Rosine, who was holding Rean’s body.
Valimar’s voice couldn’t be heard. Even so, its thought system seemed to be still running and transported Rean, along with Rosine, who held him, into the cockpit.
At the same time, it retrieved the Templar Sword that had been dropped by Rean’s Dream Gale when he cut the Panzer Soldat’s wrist. Utilizing the swordsmanship it had learned over the past few months, it swung at the giant machine that was approaching it.
By focusing on the area displayed on Valimar’s monitor, the giant machine which had sustained damage beforehand, was left in a slightly damaged state and retreated.
As they separated, the bullets the machine gun fired from the Panzer Soldat’s shoulders was deflected by a flick of Rosine’s Templar Sword.
The pilot of the giant machine was astounded by the skill.
On the other hand, Rosine herself was surprised to see that herself able to deflect bullets with her sword, which was supposed to be a swordsmanship greater than what she was capable of.
Even though it was her first time riding Valimar, Rosine already had a good understanding of how to control the Ashen Knight.
It seemed to be because of Valimar’s power, enhancing her ability as its Sub-Awakener, through power of ogre or something.
Valimar’s consciousness was not responding, and Rean was unconscious as well. Even so, Rosine couldn’t help but smile that the Ashen Knight had lent its power to her just like that.
But she would like to avoid combat as much as possible.
Not only was it due to her own personality, it was also because there was no telling how much strain would be placed on the unconscious Rean by continuous fighting.
Moreover……
“Tch, one coming after another……”
“Rosine……”
The man known as “V” stood alongside the Panzer Soldat with its giant machine.
As for the Panzer Soldat that had lost its right wrist, it absentmindedly stared at Valimar…… at Rosine.
Rosine responded to that.
“That voice, this weapon…… as I thought, it’s Scarlet-san, after all……”
“Gh.”
Hearing Rosine’s voice, the opposing pilot—— the person Rosine once looked up to like an older sister in Holy City, groaned.
Scarlet was once scouted by the Holy City’s Congregation for the Sacraments and trained to be a squire. That was where her relationship with Rosine began.
But before she could fulfill her long-cherished dream of becoming a squire and embark on her first mission, she disappeared—— and now, the Divine Knight and Panzer Soldat found themselves confronting each other.
There were many things Rosine wanted to ask.
But the one she wanted ask the most was——
“Scarlet-san…… why didn’t you kill me?”
Of course, Rosine already knew the answer.
That night, the day before the Salt Pale fragment was stolen, the person who called and attacked her was Scarlet.
There was a gap in ability between Scarlet, who had the power of an official squire, and Rosine, an apprentice who only started training in the art of swordsmanship through Rean.
Even so, she wasn’t killed and only had her Templar sword broken, which was clearly due to mercy.
“……You’re not the person I want to kill, that’s all.”
Those words, as if squeezed out, were filled with emotion and they hit Rosine.
But to put it another way, Rosine guessed that there was someone Scarlet hated to the point of wanting to kill them, which was probably the reason she quit being a squire.
“Then before you commit murder…… I’ll stop you.”
“…… ‘V,’ I’m sorry but-“
“Hmph, so she is your acquaintance. No wonder you acted so half-assedly.”
As for why he called it a half-assed act—— it was because originally, Scarlet was supposed to kill the person she called, leave the traces of conflict and the corpse to trigger a difference of opinion within the Holy City, and turned the Empire’s attention to the Gralsritter.
But when Scarlet realized the person who had been called was a girl with whom she was once close with, she instead broke Rosine’s Templar Sword, knocked her unconscious, and left the Old Schoolhouse.
Scarlet was well aware that the consequence of the careless behavior was now upon her.
But when Scarlet said she wanted to come, to her determination, on her own, “V” denied her.
“But that’s not good. We need to make sure to kill that brat, at least. He’s someone who could pull off so much despite fighting without any armory. If he could properly pilot the Divine Knight, we’d be in trouble.”
Faced with reality, “S” nodded weakly.
“That’s how it is, miss. If you get off from that now, your life will be spared, you know?”
“That would mean leaving Rean-san to die. There’s no way I’d agree to that.”
“Oi, oi, that brat is not normal, no matter how you look at it. You saw it too, right, miss? Not only is he a monster who can take on a Panzer Soldat without any armory, he has also been cursed by the legendary Dark Dragon. Since you’re a Gralsritter who calls yourself an apostle of Aidios, isn’t it wrong to leave that alone?”
“——Rean-san is my friend. So no matter what happens, I will protect him.”
Rosine held on tightly to the stolen Templar Sword.
The dark aura surrounding the Ashen Knight subsided, and instead, “V” sensed a pure fighting spirit. Deciding that there was no point in negotiations, he pointed the giant machine towards Valimar.
“’S’, if you don’t want to kill your acquaintance, you can back off. Instead, I’ll ——”
“——No, we couldn’t kill that boy because I let that girl go. I’ll put an end to that misjudgement here. If I don’t, I’ll never be able to reach that man.”
“Hah, that sounds right. Well then, let’s see your resolve.”
No further words were needed and the three readied their weapons.
Scarlet placed her spare weapon in the Panzer Soldat’s left hand, and just as she about to fire the vernier to take the lead, the singularity shook violently as if to stop her.
“What the?!”
“—— ‘V’, ‘S’! This place is collapsing, abandon it and escape!”
“What did you say?!”
Gideon came flying in on a bird-like Cryptid.
He was holding a communication device in his hand, and a deep, solemn voice was coming from it.
[“——It seems that the witch’s reinforcement has fought too enthusiastically. We’ll be abandoning this moving singularity, along with the base.”] 1
“Is that okay, ‘C’?”
[“It’ll be a lie to say it’s not a waste, but I don’t mind. Besides, the Dominion and the witch’s master are heading to your position at the moment. Even if you’re fighting with Panzer Soldat, it’ll be difficult to settle things before this singularity collapses. It would be wise to head to the rendezvous point quickly.”
“Tch, roger that. It seems your devil’s luck saved you there, miss…… no, I guess it’s that brat’s luck? Anyway, we’re pulling out, ‘S’.”
“Yes……”
The giant machine and Panzer Soldat followed along as Gideon guided the way back with the cryptid he rode.
Rosine stared intently at the Panzer Soldat that didn’t turn around, but her gaze was interrupted by a groan from Rean.
“Uuh……”
“Rean-san!”
Rean, whose body was supported by Rosine, slowly opened his eyes.
Scars were exposed on his torn chest, but the dark red bruises had disappeared. Seeing that Rean had gotten over the worst situation, Rosine breathed a sigh of relief.
“Rean-san…………”
Looking closer, there were traces of bleeding in places, staining the red on the uniform even darker.
The skin visible through the torn uniform showed signs of internal bleeding and swollen fractures and blood was oozing from his head.
His body showed just how reckless he had been.
Rosine suppressed her feelings of helplessness and guilt and quietly cast healing magic —— of which orbal magic was based on to Rean.
It was the first healing magic she learned because he was always getting injured.
The miraculous light, connected to the prayers made within the “Partition,” caused Rean’s face to turn red but his wounds began to heal.
Eventually, Rean’s eyes regained focus and he clearly recognized the girl before him.
“Ro, si, ne……?”
“Yes, this is Rosine.”
Rosine responded with a smile Rean liked —— before Rean’s hands reached for her back and he embraced her so tightly that it hurt.
“Ouch…… it hurts, Rean-san.”
“Gh…………… gh………… gh……”
Rean didn’t say anything. No, his emotions weren’t put into words.
However, his feelings overflew through his pain.
Neither of them spoke up.
Rosine accepted Rean’s hug until he calmed down—— and feeling the warm tears flowing from his eyes, she slowly closed her eyes and put her arms around Rean’s back.
Author Note:
The explanation about Salt Pale and other things will be in the next result chapter.
I also thought that I could have written more about Rosine’s battle piloting the Divine Knight.
But I was thinking of writing more during confrontation with Scarlet, so I’ll write it when the time comes, so my apologies to anyone who had looked forward to it.
