Eroge Villain 42 (Part 1)

The party lasted until late at night and the following morning we had breakfast much later than we usually did. After breakfast, as Luca listened to everyone’s plans for the day, Miranda stood up all of a sudden.

“Zagan, you’ve fully recovered, right? Accompany me for today; let’s have a duel.

“Sure.”

Her proposal came out of nowhere, but I accepted it. Wrapping the turban around my hair and pulling my hood up, I joined the waiting Miranda and the two of us left the house.

Though Luca and the others were baffled by this development, they let it go.

Well, it’s not like I didn’t understand their concern. Miranda was suffering from a hangover. Noel had cast recovery magic on her, Bennet made her basket-clam soup 1, and she got some medicine from Camilla. Despite all this, she called out to me in a clear voice and I couldn’t help but wonder what was going on.

However, no matter the reason, when an adventurer is challenged to a fight, they take up that challenge.

“Where should we do this? A place where no one will disturb us would be best, so the training hall in the Adventurer’s Guild is out of the question… How about the place where you and Noel trained?”

“It’s a bit far from here but we won’t be disturbed.”

“Then it’s decided – lead the way.”

I nodded and started walking, Miranda following behind. There were no attempts at small talk, but thinking back at how hostile she was towards me in the beginning, it was already a huge development for us to be walking side by side. It was Miranda though, and not me, who had gone through a change.

Leaving the city behind, we stepped into the forest I had stayed in until just the day before. Hearing Miranda murmur something, I looked back to check on her and saw her staring up at the trees that had lost most of their leaves. Miranda’s hobby was woodworking, so she might have been interested in them.

Efficiently defeating the monsters that would pop out from time to time, we eventually arrived at our intended location. Today as well, it lacked any sign of life.

“We’re here. Now then, what should we do about rules?”

We had to take the difference in our abilities into account and set up some ground rules so that we wouldn’t kill each other.

Incidentally, during my matches with Noel, there were no rules. I had her come at me with everything she had since it was all for the sake of training. Basically, I just blocked her sword and didn’t really launch any attacks as it wasn’t my goal to defeat her.

“Don’t use dark magic spells. No sword techniques either. I won’t use any axe techniques. Is that good with you?”

“Just using body reinforcements and magic walls? That’s easy to remember. Understood.”

“Alright, here I come!”

Miranda specialised in using a halberd. It was a weapon that combined both a battle axe and a spear. It could slice, stab, cleave and attack in many other ways. However, the axe portion of Miranda’s halberd was huge. There was a lot of mana stored inside of it and I would wager that she’d grown significantly stronger since the first time we fought.

Taking advantage of an opening, the blade of her axe swung down. I avoided it and the blow carved a hole in the ground. I could feel the vibrations from the attack; what tremendous power. The following movements became quicker as well.

This time she swung from the side like she was using a scythe. Although I jumped back, avoiding the axe itself, the wind generated from the attack chased after me as if to slice my flesh. 2 As I blocked the wind with a magic wall, the spear-end of the halberd was thrust at me. I diverted the tip of the spear with the coulisse of my dagger. 3 The screech of clanging metal rang in the air.

Miranda’s eyes opened in surprise and she immediately drew back. Was it because the halberd was a long weapon and she needed to use her whole body to wield it, leaving her open to an attack?

“Ha! I didn’t think you’d be able to stop my attacks so easily even though they’re that strong. Ah, I’m getting excited.”

“Is that so? Hope you don’t catch a cold.” 4

“You get called an airhead because you say stuff like that with such a blank expression!”

With a fwoosh, the axe came flying once again. I deliberately blocked it with the dagger and flung it upwards, causing Miranda to stagger. I kicked her, but unlike Noel who had gone flying, Miranda just staggered some more. Her defense was strong and sturdy.

By the way, the only person who calls me an airhead or a tsundere is Luca.

An hour later the duel came to an end.

“Haa, haa… I give…” Miranda called out from where she collapsed on the ground.

“Got it.” I said, sheathing my dagger.

She sat up, took a potion out of her magic bag and gulped it down. Her wounds healed right before my eyes.

“Pwah! Ah, I couldn’t even get a proper hit in. Just how strong are you?”

“I used to live in the Great Forest before Lumiere appeared. All I did was fight day in and day out so both my mana and my experience are more advanced than yours.”

“So it was like that… The reason you’re strong isn’t entirely because of your black hair!”

Miranda sat on the ground and did not move. She was also furrowing her brows. It seemed that while we were fighting, she had reached some sort of resolution.

“What is it that you wanted to obtain by sparring with me?”

“What is this? Did you see through me?”

“It’s not like I know everything, it’s just that you should have known from the start that I’m stronger than you. It was easy to come to the conclusion that you didn’t challenge me to a duel so that you could win.”

Which was why I didn’t use a strong attack to end this duel immediately, instead waiting for Miranda to give up. I wonder if that was unnecessary though.

Tilting her head to the side, Miranda stared up at me before letting out a loud sigh.

“It was my way of clearing things up. The two of us are adventurers and there are some things we can only talk about through our swords… right?”

That was something we agreed on. There were things that were better expressed through the clashing of swords than through words.

If Miranda was trying to clear the air by having a duel with me, then it probably had something to do with dark attribute users.

Nina had said it before, that when Miranda learned that I was Noel’s brother, she was depressed and loathed herself for hating me based on my attribute.

She had certainly hated me from the moment that we met, but that was a normal reaction when it came to dark attribute users. The strange ones were Luca and Noel who were friendly towards me. Which was why Miranda’s attitude didn’t bother me, but it seemed that she deeply regretted it.

However, since she knew I didn’t really care, apologising to me would be meaningless. It would only take away a little of the guilt that she felt. So Miranda chose to use her blade and not her words to express her remorse and the way that she will face me in the future.

That’s right. We were adventurers. It didn’t matter who won the duel, when it was over, we were friends.

I didn’t hold my hand out to Miranda who was still sitting on the ground. Instead, I took out two chairs and placed them next to her.

Miranda sat down on one of them and took out two bottles of beer as well as two beer mugs. I also set up a small table and took out some snacks.

As Miranda poured the beer, I set up a magic barrier around us. That way nothing would come and disturb us.

Miranda raised her mug as I sat down and I too grabbed hold of the mug in front of me.

“Cheers!”

“Cheers.”

We clanked our mugs together and both of us tipped our drinks back. The beer had a great fragrance and was refreshing and easy to drink. I finished about half of it while Miranda gulped everything down in one go.

“Pwah! Nothing beats a glass of beer after a fight!”

“Mm… I don’t drink much, but even I can tell how delicious it is.”

“Speaking of which, this beer is expensive; be thankful I’m letting you drink it.”

“Yeah, I’m grateful.”

“You, you really are an airhead. Noel’s kind of an airhead too… you siblings resemble each other.”

As she murmured this, she took out a bottle of whiskey and two glasses, pouring a whiskey neat into one of them.

 That’s not for me, right?

“You want it cut? On the rocks?”

“Cut.”

I’m glad she asked me. If I were to drink whiskey neat, I’d get drunk right away. She didn’t ask if I wanted it that way so she probably had some grasp as to my alcohol tolerance. Last night I only had a couple of beers.

By the way, Luca had a high tolerance and Cindy could drink alcohol like it was water.

After I finished the beer, I tasted the whiskey and ate from the snacks. There were peanuts and cheese. Also, since it was almost noon anyway, I figured we might as well have lunch while we were at it, and took food out of my magic bag. Today’s lunch was shrimp and salmon pasta with tomato sauce.

Miranda was drinking at quite a fast pace and at this rate she was going to get drunk again even though she had a hangover just this morning.

Since it seemed unwise to let her continue, I waited for the chance to stop her, but she stared into her glass and started talking.
