Chapter AF28 – The Reason She Hates Red Even More

I feel like the time was a little off, but Merry Christmas!

Anyway, this is the familiar Elrise here.

The seasons had passed and winter had come again.

Around this time of the year, I would be called in to take part in some troublesome event called the Saint’s Birthday Festival, but I didn’t have to participate this year.

The reason was that I had already retired as Saint, and Alfrea would be appearing in the parade in my place.

That was fine, but doing nothing would also feel lacking, so for now I’m in the middle of making a cake.

But Christmas cake…… it felt like it was a thing from a long time ago.

I had been reincarnated into this world for quite a long time, but half of my soul belonged to Fudou Niito who lived on the other side until recently, so it actually felt like I was living in Japan until quite recently.

And yet, it felt like it had been a long time since I last celebrated Christmas.

……Actually, now that I thought about it, I never actually celebrated one.

I didn’t have someone to celebrate Christmas with, and I just thought of Christmas as a period of people competing for discounted cakes every year.

It was strange that someone like me, now that I couldn’t return to Japan, found myself feeling nostalgic for Christmas.

This time, I’ve changed my style from my usual pure white dress to a red dress with some white, but unfortunately, no one in this world knew the meaning of this color except me, so Leila just thought, “You’re wearing different clothes than usual today.”

Of course, this Christmas color was NG during my time as a saint.

The First Saint Alfrea hated the color red, so it was excluded not only from the academy but also from the Saint’s clothing.

I might be a fake Saint, but a fake had to be more conscious of appearing real than the real thing.

So naturally, there was no way I could wear red, which was the polar opposite of the image of a Saint.

But now I was neither Saint nor fake Saint. I was just a retired civilian.

Therefore, I could ignore the image of a Saint and wear red like this.

There was no problem unless Alfrea herself showed up!

“Yahoo~! Elrise, I’ve come~!”

Yep, flag collected.

No, why did she come? I didn’t say she shouldn’t come, but I was sure she should be busy preparing for the birthday celebration.

“You see~ Rex said he wanted to bring Elrise with me after all…… Hey, what’s with that outfit?! Why is it all red?!”

“Ah~…… Well, there’s no deep meaning about it…… I just feel like wearing it.”

There was no rule in this world that said one couldn’t wear red.

So it wasn’t a sin or anything, but I still feel guilty.

Because of this, I ended up giving an excuse-filled explanation to Alfrea.

“I went to another world last time, right? I found out that there was an interesting event going on there.”

“Event?”

“Yes, it’s called Christmas. And this outfit is a reference to Santa Claus, who only appears at Christmas.”

“So…… what kind of person is that?”

Hearing Alfrea’s question, I started thinking about what Santa Claus was after all this time.

If I had a smartphone with me, I could just search the internet for answers, but unfortunately, I didn’t have one.

But I only remember vague things, like it was modeled after a certain person named Saint something.

That said, even if I explain such things to Alfrea, she probably wouldn’t understand.

So I decided to think about what I knew about Santa Claus.

……Well, since I got the opportunity, I might as well mix it with jokes and tell her about it.

Humor was important sometimes.

“Santa Claus is a mysterious old man with a beard that covers his mouth, dressed in a bright red costume that looks like fresh blood, carrying a white bag, who climbs into other people’s houses through the chimney without permission while yelling “Merry Christmas!” and then slips presents into socks before leaving. He is a kind of youkai.”

“What’s that, it sounds scary?!”

“He boasts incredible strength, being able to carry a bag filled with the belongings of tens or hundreds of millions of people, and it is said that he travels through the sky at 8.2 million kilometers per hour on a sled pulled by reindeers, breaking into approximately 300 million houses in a single night in search of ‘good children’.”

“Eh, doesn’t that mean he is faster than Elrise…… That’s scary……”

Huh? Alfrea seemed a bit scared.

Leila, who was listening next to me, also turned pale and trembled, saying “That sounds like more of a monster than ‘Witch’……”

Huh? I thought it would be funny…… but maybe I explained it wrong……

I read somewhere that if one seriously calculated Santa Claus’ speed, it turned out to be an incredible speed if put into digits.

But 8.2 million kilometers per hour sounded ridiculous. That was 0.8% of the speed of light……1

I burst out laughing when I first read about it, but Alfrea and Leila’s reactions were different from what I expected.

Oh no…… I think I made a poor joke.

――Later on, King Aiz told me that Alfrea had grown to dislike the color red even more, and I ended up being confronted about what exactly I had told her.

I shouldn’t say weird things just to get a laugh.
