Chapter 24 – New Facts about Miasma

Once we returned to the royal capital, Jill, Luis-san, Claude-san and I went to report to the king.

“I’m surprised you all returned earlier than expected. Was the miasma in the west forest really purified?”

“…Your Majesty, your retainers are here, so please mind your language.”

“Elder brother, It’s fine for now, right? I can act properly when the situation calls for it. But right here, there’s no need for me to take extra caution.”

The king laughed nonchalantly. He didn’t look that similar to Jill. When I first met him in the audience, I wasn’t able to take a good look at him, but upon closer observation, he was like an intelligent ikemen with a slender build.1

His bright, blond hair and droopy emerald eyes gave off a gentle impression, so his looks would definitely be popular among women.

“Haa.. It’s alright. Thanks to Akira, we safely purified the miasma pool in the West forest. The knights selected by Claude moved so excellently that there was no chance for us to appear. No one was injured, and everything went well.”

“The miasma pool in the West forest was comparatively small, but it’s a surprise that the mission was completed quickly. I’m grateful for Itou-dono’s cooperation from the bottom of my heart. Let me thank you in full when all is said and done. Thanks to you, I think we will be able to solve the problem that has been troubling us for a long time.”

“I’m glad to be of assistance even though I have only finished the first one.”

“I pray that things will still continue smoothly in the future. I look forward to working with you, so please keep up the good work.”

Then, the king looked at the man standing near him. The man had navy-blue hair, amber eyes, and a height that was about the same as mine.

“I’m thinking of introducing the new Prime Minister to Itou-dono today.”

“Nice to meet you, Itou-sama. I’m Sachez Boldorova. Please kindly take care of me from now on.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you too.”

He was a man with a charming smile. He might be around the same age as me.

“Compared to the previous Prime Minister, he is young but brilliant. Sachez will take his place in future events, and you’ll be interacting with him from now on.”

I had already decided to cooperate with the Dynas Royal Family, but I didn’t feel like getting along with that Prime Minister who put a slave collar on me.

It seemed like the ex-Prime Minister took his position in the late King’s reign. Although he was quite capable in the past, the king found it difficult to handle the many times he overstepped his authority.

It was quite difficult to remove him from the position of Prime Minister because of the problems among Aristocratic factions. Eventually, the king dismissed him from his position as previous investigations revealed the frauds he committed.

Perhaps the friendly atmosphere, courtesy of the members present, might be the reason for the king’s natural expression. It was the right time, so I decided to ask a question that had been plaguing me for a while.

“Your majesty. May I ask you a question?”

“Yes, I don’t mind.”

“When miasma broke out in the previous generation, Dynas was not allied with the Argyle Empire, so the Argyle Empire wouldn’t dispatch their Miko here, right? How has the Dynas Empire been dealing with miasma?”

“In the previous generation, we were embroiled in a cold war with the Argyle Empire; they didn’t dispatch their Miko to the Dynas Empire and their allied nations. According to the records, the miasma naturally disappeared about ten or several years after the first outbreak.”

….Ehhh!!! Did it mean that the miasma can naturally disappear?!

I was stunned by these shocking facts.

I had been thinking about this for a while. It had been almost two years since I was summoned, and all the miasma had yet to be purified. But at any rate, there was no sign that the world was in grave danger.

Come to think of it, Kagaya-kun’s first expedition occurred 3 months after the summoning ritual. It felt like things were going well…

Huh? Then, was a Miko even necessary at all?

No – no, it would be better to have a Miko, but there was no need for them to painstakingly summon one from another world…

For the first time in a while, I remembered the face of that red-headed prince and shitty emperor.

Yep, that kind of guy wouldn’t even inquire about whether or not it would be necessary to summon Miko. They would be like ‘Oh! There’s miasma, let’s summon a Miko—!.”

Jill was considerate enough to ask me as I looked down and fell silent.

“Are you shocked to hear that you were summoned for something that will naturally disappear?”

“….A little bit.”

He was right, but they weren’t the ones who summoned me. As I replied modestly, Sachez-san explained with an apologetic look.

“…I heard you were brought here against your will. I am sorry, Itou-sama. But it is also a grave matter for the empire if miasma persists for more than 10 years. If this continues, the increase in the monster population and their persistent ferociousness will exhaust the adventurers and knights from the front lines.. More towns will suffer from intensive damages. The expense for the national defence will also hit a new high, and numerous places will suffer from these negative consequences.”

“In the previous generations, the longer miasma persisted, the greater the damage it caused. In the later stages, some of the cities were destroyed. There were also records of invasion as other countries unaffected by miasma took advantage of the decline in the country’s national power.”

The king continued.

“To prevent similar situations from recurring, His Majesty instructed us to review the budget, hire more knights, and expand the stations’ facilities to cope with the coming situations, but we’re unsure of the duration of this calamity. At any rate, we’re still anxious about this situation. That’s the reason why Itou-sama, who can purity miasma, is like a ray of hope for us.”

More than 10 years… Ah, that’s quite difficult

…No, I had already been in this world and said I would purify the miasma. I was still confused but was somehow able to sort out my thoughts. So let’s think positively, as this means that there were still some things left that I could do.

According to a report delivered to Claude-san, the forest in the north was in the most dangerous condition. Also, the Keets and Selphia Forests were in the centre of the miasma outbreak.

In addition, there were reports of small miasma pools in the forest that I went to together with Al.

There were relatively few monsters in the West forest, and unlike others, it had comparatively small miasma poolst. That destination was chosen in consideration of the fact that it was the first time I would perform purification.

First of all, the plan was to travel east to purify miasma in Keets Forest. Then, head to the forest in the north, and lastly, to Selphia Forest on the way to the Royal Capital. We would also purify the small miasma pools we encounter from various places along the way.
