Chapter 27: To the North Forest – Part 2

At that exact moment, a muscular man with short brown hair entered the infirmary. I looked at him and gasped as the man carried luggage with just his right shoulder. A part of his left arm was missing from above the elbow.

A person beside me called out to him.

“Kevin, Miko-sama came to us! Look at all of us! Our injuries were healed in an instant. You should also show your arm to Miko-sama – your injuries will finally be healed!”

The man called Kevin glanced at me in surprise, but he quickly turned his head away and said, “It’s okay. My injury is different from yours, guys. Even a Healer from the Royal Capital can’t restore the missing part of my arm. It’s alright… My dominant hand is still fine, so I’ll be able to find a job when I return to my hometown.”

He was bitten by a poisonous monster in the attack that happened two days ago. To prevent spread of the venom throughout his body, his arm was amputated according to the doctor’s instructions.

It would be difficult to perform his duties as a knight with his remaining right hand, so he was now packing up his belongings to return to his hometown. It seemed like it wasn’t that uncommon for knights to receive severe injuries in battles against monsters at the north fortress. Because of this, it wasn’t that rare for injured knights to retire.

Kevin-san was packing his luggage with his back to us. There was bitterness in every line of his body. Judging by his physique and old scars, he must have been a knight for several years now.

If that was the context, he would be quite frustrated to retire from knighthood because of his injuries. He was also too young to quit…

“I don’t know if I can restore it or not, but would you mind showing it to me?”

Unable to endure this situation any longer, I called out to him. He looked a bit troubled about the treatment. Despite his hesitation, he still approached me.

Then, I healed Kevin-san while imagining the end of his remaining arm. I wonder if this would work…

The remaining end of his left arm began to glow brightly, and little by little, the amputated end stretched out until his fingertips were reformed. From the look of it, his lost arm had fully recovered.

It was such a miraculous scene. But were his nerves functioning at all…?

“Uh, can you move your arm? Do you feel any discomfort?”

Kevin-san stared at his restored arm and stood stiffly for a while. Next, he cautiously flexed his hand and then… Then, he shouted.

“It’s back! My arm is back! I can move… I can feel sensations… With this, I can continue fighting!”

Kevin-san turned towards me and bowed to me with respect. 1

“Thank you very much. Thanks to you, I don’t have to retire from my duty as a knight. I will never forget this kindness for the rest of my life.”

He looked up and stared straight at me with a smiling face and happy tears trickled in the corners of his eyes.

I was glad. While I was smiling happily, Jill came and stood beside me without my notice.

“I’ve never heard of healing magic that can restore missing parts… The Miko’s magic is incredible… But I think it would be better not to spread this information.”

At the time, a knight beside Kevin-san murmured something.

“It’s amazing… I wonder if Giselle and the others would still be here if Miko-sama had come earlier…. Ah, I’m sorry!”

That knight was surprised when he looked at me, then he laughed it off as he didn’t seriously mean it. But for me, his words stayed in my heart.

Jill walked in front of me as I followed him out absentmindedly. Then, he looked back at me and said,

“Akira, thank you. I’m grateful enough that you’re helping us out. Because of you, even Kevin-san can still live as a knight without giving up.”

Jill’s deep blue eyes were fixed on me.

“Please take care of us from now on, Miko-dono!”

He laughed cheerfully after saying this.

Jill always used the right words at the right time.

Truthfully, I was saddened by the words of that knight. I was summoned here against my will and had no obligation to serve this world. That’s the reason why I ran around and hid my identity for my survival… Just so I could live.

But even so, it was still depressing to know that there were many that could have been saved. I might not know them, but there were surely many people that must have suffered from the miasma or lost their lives from this calamity. I could have saved them or eased their agony.

Since I started purifying miasma, I’ve been wondering, ‘what If I had worked as a Miko much earlier’ and what if I healed those wounded or sick…’ I knew it couldn’t be helped anymore, but I got saddled with these thoughts from time to time.

I didn’t know whether or not Jill was aware of how depressed I felt, but I at least felt a little better from hearing those words.

There was no point in dwelling on the past, and there were limits to what I could do myself. All I had to do was to continue doing what I could from now on.

There were many things that I needed to do. As I looked at the strong back of Jill walking in front of me, I re-motivated myself.

The next day, I was awakened by an ear splitting alarm.

Then, I rushed out of my room and reunited with Jill. He was standing in the corridor in front of my room.

“What’s that noise?”

“It’s probably an alarm to signal the knights when monsters attack. Let’s go and join the others for the time being.”

It seemed special magic devices were installed in the north forest. As soon as the monsters marched towards the direction of the fortress and crossed paths with the location of the installed device, an alarm would ring.

We joined the fortress knights on the way and hurried to the gate. The knight stationed in the observatory reported that he saw the massive influx of monsters marching towards the fortress.

The chilly air that could make my head freeze enveloped me once I stepped outside. One of the knights of the fortress that went outside the gate earlier muttered,

“How can this be…?”

I went out of the gate and looked down from atop the hill. Then, I saw a horde of blackish monsters that were heading to the fortress from the direction of the forest. They were still some distance away, but the sight of them was enough to overwhelm me.

I couldn’t take my eyes off of the swarm at all. It was so out of the ordinary that this didn’t feel like reality. The sheer scale couldn’t be compared to the previous subjugation I went to with Jill.

I was scared…

My heart was beating faster instinctively and I felt like I was suffocating.

As I froze in fear, Jill said something as he looked into my eyes.

“Are you afraid? Take a deep breath. Your movements will worsen if you’re shaking. You’re an excellent magician, and you also have a lot of experience in actual combat. It’ll be alright.” 2

“…Yes.”

“Leave it to me. I’ll strike down the approaching monsters without leaving a single one alive. We’re also quite strong. I’ll leave my back to you, you can do that, right?”)

“Ok.”

“Great! Now, raise your head and take another look at ‘em. See, doesn’t this get you fired up?”

As unbelievable as it was, Jill was smiling joyfully with his dazzling eyes. I felt not a trace of fear nor agitation in his voice.

Damn! He was so cool! So this was a veteran adventurer… Would I feel like him if I worked as an adventurer for a few more years?… I still had a long way to go.
