Chapter 31 – My First Weapon and His Confession

Ohh—.

When I went into the weapon store that Jill took me to, I was awestruck by its interior as soon as I entered.

All types of weapons with various forms were lined up inside the store; some of the designs were what I was familiar with, but some of those were so unique that I had no idea how to use them.

My excitement rose up seeing this fantasy-like spectacular scene which I could never experience in my own world.

Then, why was I in this weapon store in the first place? It was because Jill advised me to at least have one weapon for self-defense in case of unexpected situations.

To tell the truth, even though I was an adventurer, I didn’t have a single weapon in my possession.

My combat-style depended on magic and I left the dismantling of monsters to the traders so I was able to somehow manage without a weapon until now. It would be more profitable if I sold the materials after dismantling, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.

“It’s for self-defense so a short sword will suffice. It will be better if it’s light and sturdy. How about this one?”

Jill handed me a small dagger.

“Yes, it’s light and looks nice. I’ll take this.”

I couldn’t discern whether a weapon had good quality or not. I would just leave it to the expert here.

“Still, there’s such a wide range of weapons to choose from… So, adventurers get their equipment here—. Ah that one. Doesn’t it look flashy?”

As I was looking at the weapons displayed inside the store, a large sword suddenly caught my attention. Its scabbard and handle were heavily decorated, and to top it all off, a large jewel was pointlessly embedded in the pommel. Of course, the price was by far the most expensive.

“Ahh, that one. The aristocrats like that kind of extravagant item so it’s decorated like this but I think that sword might actually be a good one. Its blade is made with high quality materials so it’s not just for show and it can be used in actual battle. …But I would prefer it without decoration.”

He whispered the last words so that no one else could hear them.

“Then, where did you buy your sword?”

“Ah, this sword. This was the one my father gave me a long time ago. I don’t know its origin, but this is probably a great sword. I took a liking to its look, and its big size is a fit for me so this guy has been my companion for many years.”

From his father… Was it from the late king? That’s right, I had nearly forgotten the fact that he was a former prince. This was guaranteed to be a great sword for sure…

We left the weapon store and walked towards the direction of the inn where we were staying.

“That reminds me, I heard from Luis-san that you have been fighting in the same style for a long time. Why only that style?”

“Because isn’t it cool?”

…Oh—, so it was a very simple reason…

“It was a book I read when I was a kid. A swordsman using flames appeared in it, and I don’t remember if it was a true story or just fiction but that swordsman was really cool. So I thought that I might become like him.”

Jill smiled like a young boy.

“Luis-san also said that flames have a lot of different effects, so was that idea also from a book?”

“No, that’s my original idea. If it’s an ordinary flame, it can’t be used in actual battle. That’s why, for example, when subjugating monsters, I had thought about whether I could raise the temperature of the flame at once to see if I could melt the tough outer skin of monsters. After quite a bit of trial and error, it reached the state it’s in now. I’ve been asked a lot about how I made this technique, but I don’t really understand it myself so I can’t explain it well.”

He might be the same as me when I used magic (only using imagination). To think Jill had the same cheat-skill as an otherworlder like me, it was really strange….

At night, Jill came to my room with a bottle of alcohol.

“The liquor store across the street was selling good alcohol so I bought it. Why don’t we talk a little while drinking?”

I nodded and invited Jill into my room. I was not strong with alcohol but I quite liked it. All the things Jill recommended, whether it was inns or food, never disappointed me.

As we sat on the sofa by the window and enjoyed having casual conversation without being drunk, Jill suddenly asked me with a serious face.

“Hey, Akira, what are you planning to do in the future? You’re not planning to stay in the capital forever, are you?”

“I guess not. My home is in Miriel and I happen to like that city so if possible, I would like to live there.”

“Is it because of Al that you still haven’t returned to Miriel? …Are you still concerned about Alphonse?”

“…Haha… Certainly, I still haven’t returned to Miriel because my heart isn’t ready to meet with Al yet. I don’t resent him anymore for bringing me to the castle, and it’s not that I never want to meet him again…. It’s just that it’s a bit awkward.”

“Are you thinking you want to go back to how it was before with him? I mean not as friends but….like….”

It was quite rare for Jill to be this evasive.

“You mean like going out with him?”

“…Yeah…”

“Well, I don’t think it’s possible anymore. We’ve finally become friends, and I hope that we can stay as friends for a long time.”

“Didn’t you like him back then?”

“…I’m not sure. In my world, it’s not that same-sex relationships don’t exist, but it’s just that it’s not common. And I never saw the same sex in that way before. I did like Al, but I think it’s more like goodwill toward a friend….”

I said it like this but as embarrassing as it was, at that time, I completely felt that about him, but I wasn’t confident enough to declare this feeling to be love.

Jill lowered his gaze, and after pondering for a while, he raised his head.

“Can I become a target of your affection?”

“Eh?”

“I’m drawn to your strength, and your kindness. I feel very comfortable around you. Will you be my lover?” 1

Eh, what?! Did I get confessed to by Jill?! It was an unexpected and very straightforward confession. My face became scarlet from panic and nervousness.

“…..eh-eh. I do like you and trust you, but I still want to think carefully about my feelings so… Umm…can you wait for me a little longer?”

“I see. I’m glad that you didn’t flat out reject me right away. Please think carefully about this. I’ll always wait for you until I get your reply.”

He smiled saying this and then he stood up.

“Then, it’s getting late so I’ll go back to my room. Well, good night.”

“Ok, good night.”

I saw him off with a somewhat confused feeling.

The next day we met, Jill had the same face as usual so just for a moment, I thought yesterday’s confession was a dream. But thanks to that, it wasn’t awkward at all.

…Was I the only one who was nervous thinking about this and that…?

If I’m honest, I don’t think Jill’s feelings are for love, it’s more like a relationship of convenience, if they establish a sentimental relationship, the mc will feel some kind of obligation to cooperate with the kingdom even if jill doesn’t ask for his favor or force him.

Jill is at least a significantly more stable option. He’s at least a grand duke, even if he doesn’t directly hold territories, but he’s also an incredibly powerful adventurer. There would be basically nobody who would dare try to wrong his spouse, and a male spouse would go a long way to stabilize the line of succession for the king.
