Kijima’s Misfortune (Kijima POV)
Kijima’s pitiful day a few years after the main story.
I put the plastic supermarket bags I was holding in both hands on the floor and squatted then and there in defeat.
“I knew it was going to be like this!”
A very displeased “Hah?” was directed at me from above.
I didn’t even need to look to know. The owner of this room must be looking down at me with an extremely unwelcome expression, a displeased aura, and an intimidating presence.
Hey, you were the one who called me over, okay!?
To be honest, I had a strange and bad premonition from the start.
It was around noon today when I received a message from the man who only occasionally contacted me.
There was no context, just a message that seemed like a shopping list.
Normally, he would have mentioned a few more things in that blunt tone of his, but this time he really only sent that list. I waited for a while but there was no follow-up.
I thought maybe the message had been sent to the wrong number, but then a realization suddenly occurred to me.
Maybe he ran into some kind of trouble that stopped him from taking action.
I looked over the list again and saw that most were microwaveable meals, bottled drinks, and daily necessities.
Perhaps he and his roommate were in some kind of crisis.
Illness or injury for example.
I felt the blood in my entire body go cold.
I couldn’t concentrate on my work after that, so I left work a little early and ran to the nearest supermarket.
I hurried with the bags and arrived at the foot of the apartment building where they lived.
I was worried they didn’t disengage their lock, but I realized that was an unfounded worry after I entered their front door.
Then I heard a voice that didn’t sound like it belonged to a sick person, so I tilted my head.
I quickly headed to the room and opened the front door. The owner of the apartment looked very healthy wearing loose loungewear I’d never seen him in before. His hair was messy and he was giving off such a seductive aura that even a beta man like me couldn’t look at him straight. Now, we have reached the part where I collapsed on the ground…
“Y-You… I thought that you wouldn’t do something like this at least. I trusted you…!”
“So what? You’re gonna wake Shinya, so keep your voice down.”
Although indignant, I quieted down and shut my mouth.
No, wait. I was angry, okay?
“No matter what, you shouldn’t have called me during his heat!”
I hissed at him, and he finally seemed to understand why I was angry.
“Ah,” he muttered but didn’t apologize.
This bastard.
This man, with no trace of his usual sophisticated handsome aura, was my friend and an alpha—Amami Ren.
He was the mate and partner of my other friend, an omega named Karasawa Shinya.
We met in high school, and we respected each other and built a good friendship even though we had different secondary genders. That didn’t change even after the two of them became mates.
To them, I was a solid friend they could talk to about anything… We had been friends for so long that I could even brag about it.
But still.
Just because Karasawa, an omega, was entering his heat and Amami, his mate, would not be able to leave him…
Did not mean they could ask me to go shopping like this!
I knew very well that they had to do things like that since they were mates, but at least let me pretend I wasn’t aware of it!!!
And so that was what I said in a rushed and low voice.
Even Amami, as expected, looked embarrassed and nodded several times. How about an apology?
“His heat is on a normal cycle, but… Shinya caught a cold just before. And then he went into heat, so our supplies were almost exhausted.”
“…”
“It’s gotten better now, so I can at least step away for a moment, but it’s difficult to go shopping. So…”
“…”
“…Thanks, Kijima.”
Yeah. Well, whatever.
He muttered his thanks while looking away, but it was rare to hear such honest words from Amami, whose pride was higher than Mt. Everest and who always treated me roughly. It made me happy.
I was satisfied with the reason he gave and asked him to check the contents of the bag.
I bought a can of peaches at my own discretion, thinking that he might need it if he had a cold, and Amami accepted it, saying that Karasawa would be happy.
Even so, I glanced up at him.
He had a sullen look on his face, with zero percent of his facial muscles motivated—something he never did in front of his mate. He didn’t even try to cover it up.
“Jeez, I’m just a beta so I really don’t understand how alphas can get so overprotective.”
“…What.”
“Isn’t there a convenience store nearby? Can’t you just go out and do a little shopping?”
I put the drinks I bought in the fridge (I don’t know why I was the one doing it) and started chatting.
Maybe my words sounded a little critical.
But the answer I got was firm.
“I could never leave Shinya while he’s in heat.”
“Why?”
“It would be troublesome if someone took him away.”
I wondered what kind of face he was making while saying something so serious, and I turned around quickly.
Amami wasn’t laughing or messing around, he was serious. He even seemed a little displeased.
“Hold on, isn’t Karasawa your mate? No other alphas can detect his pheromones.”
“Shinya during his heat is way too cute. That won’t change even without his pheromones. I don’t want anyone to see him, and I don’t even want to think about someone targeting him.”
“Hey, the security here is crazy good, so he’d be fine as long as he stayed in the room.”
“An alpha would even climb walls to get to an omega in heat.”
He was treating alphas like cockroaches.
It was a very insensitive, discriminatory, and cruel comment, but now that I thought about it, he has always been like this since high school. Was it too late now?
“Even so, nowadays you can order things online…”
“They don’t arrive immediately after ordering them. Also if Shinya is awake when the intercom is pressed, I don’t want him to get up and leave me.”
“Wait a second, were you planning on making me wait if I came while Karasawa wasn’t asleep?”
“Of course.”
He has only been saying rude things so far.
I was human too. Even though I was a grown man, I could cry too, you know?
Ignoring my tears starting to form, Amami continued speaking with a reluctant look.
“And I don’t like it when delivery people get involved. Both Shinya and I think so.”
“Ahh…”
I could only nod in agreement.
It seemed that because alphas and omegas were such a small population, they were constantly subjected to a variety of sentiments.
They had more or less experienced unpleasant things, and they feared the next time they would be exposed to such curious gazes.
The majority of people born as betas could only imagine how they felt and couldn’t truly understand. There were probably many who wouldn’t even imagine it. Sometimes this isolation could be frustrating.
Amami was especially irritated because his mate was in heat.
I understood that he didn’t want to be bothered by others.
If that was the case, then I guess I could forgive him for making me his errand boy.
Even though he didn’t want strangers to get close or see his mate, he gave me the pass.
“Hehehe.”
“What? You’re being gross.”
“You’ve been so mean to me this whole time! Even I’m a little hurt—”
“Who is it…? Kijima?”
Amami and I turned around at the same time.
Behind us, standing in the middle of the living room near the entrance to the kitchen, was my other friend and Amami’s mate—Karasawa.
Karasawa was dressed in even looser clothes than Amami.
His glossy black hair was now messy, and in contrast to his sleepy, narrowed eyes, his cheeks looked red and flushed.
He was only wearing a large dress shirt that didn’t suit his physique, and the underwear he was barely wearing looked like it was about to slip off at any moment…
“Well! I’m going home! Take care, Karasawa!”
“Kijima, wait a minute.”
“Amami, let’s go out for dinner when Karasawa gets better!”
“Stop. You saw how cute Shinya was, leave those eyes behind.”
“Sorry for intruding~!”
I exited the room as fast as I could, ran through the hallway at a brisk pace, and finally let out a sigh as I left the apartment complex.
I felt like Amami said something outrageous as I was leaving, but I was a generous person so I would let that slide.
If both of my eyes were gouged out in a quarrel like that, no matter how many lives I had, they wouldn’t be enough.
“Hah~ …I want to cry.”
I’ll get him to pay me back several times over for today’s shopping later.
I headed home, lamenting my own kindness that let him off with just that small debt.
I wondered what Karasawa would think about me seeing him like that after his heat. I wondered what that terrifying mate of his would think when Karasawa told him.
I made a conscious effort to forget the chill that ran down my spine.
