Chapter 22
Heat? I kept feeling my forehead with my left hand over and over again. If you say it’s hot, then it could be a fever, but… wasn’t it because I just got out of the bath?
Iyuri-san quickly left the bathroom and carried me to the other room. He called out to Solvay-san, who was waiting nearby, “Get an ice pack! Ollie-san’s fever is high!”
As soon as my vision stopped bouncing around, I saw a big bed. There was a canopy draped around it made of translucent white fabric. If he lay in the middle, Iyuri-san could probably roll over three times without falling out of the bed. It definitely was a bed worthy of a king!
Uwaah, amazing! Could it be that this was Iyuri-san’s bed? Moo is here, so does that mean this is Iyuri-san’s room?
There was a middle-aged man standing next to the bed. Who was that? Ah, maybe it’s a court physician who’s able to be discreet and keep secrets?
As I was looking around, I was laid down to rest on the edge of the big bed. No sooner was I laid down on the bed that I began to feel sleepy. It had been 3 days since I was able to sleep in a bed, so it felt really relaxing.
What’s more, it was a lot more luxurious than my bed at my childhood home. Sooo fluffy. Oh no, I’m sleepy, I’m seriously gonna fall asleep.
“…Iyuri-san…”
It’s not just any regular bout of drowsiness, it’s like someone is forcing my eyelids to close, an extreme state of drowsiness. Maybe I’m so sleepy because I just took a bath.
I weakly tugged on the sleeve of Iyuri-san’s clothes.
“Is it okay if I just sleep for a little bit? If I’m in the way later, you can just roll me onto the floor,” I said, my eyelids already slipping shut.
“Ollie-san? Does it hurt or feel uncomfortable anywhere?” Iyuri-san carefully studied my expression, looking worried.
I shook my head lazily from side to side, my eyelids closed. Sleepiness has won. I’m sorry.
***
“Fuaaaah…” I slowly sat up and stretched. I slept so well!
Hm? Where am I? The old well…ah! That’s it! Iyuri-san and Solvay-san came and rescued me!
I was so sleepy, I went through the medical examination in a dream-like state. I was completely knocked out. My body feels healthy, quite light. Wah! My wrist is tied up with a really stiff cast! Could it be that it was actually broken?
When I looked down near my feet, I saw Iyuri-san sleeping face down with only the upper half of his body on the bed1. Yikes! I ended up monopolizing the entire bed! Even though I told him to just roll me off if needed.
There was a cloak draped over the futon, so I took it and put it over Iyuri’s shoulders. Next to him, Moo was resting his head on the bed and staring up at me.
“Moo! You’re cute as ever. Good morning!”
Moo barked back quietly, “Rruf.” It was as if he was being careful to not wake Iyuri-san up.
What a good boy!
As I was petting his head, Iyuri-san suddenly shot up. That scared me!
He stared at me so intensely I thought his eyes were going to burn a hole in me. Don’t look at me like that. I’m getting nervous.
“Ollie-san! You’re woken up! How are you feeling?!”
He gently took my uninjured hand in his and stroked it gently.
“My body feels light, and my head doesn’t hurt. Sorry, I ended up taking up the entire bed. I probably snored, didn’t I?”
When I said this, Iyuri-san had a relieved expression on his face.
“You slept for about two days, so I was really worried. You really don’t feel uncomfortable anywhere, right? Does it hurt anywhere? Your wrist was fractured. And then there were all those scrapes, cuts, bruises, you were dehydrated and had a sudden high fever…”
I was asleep for almost two days?! I guess my wrist was broken after all. And on top of that, I was dehydrated with a high fever. I’m really sorry for troubling you!
“There’s really nothing wrong! My body is no longer feverish, my wrist is throbbing a little but the pain is nothing like before. I’m fine. Sorry for troubling you.”
“Don’t feel like you were troubling us, and there’s no need to apologize. I brought this upon you because I’m a good-for-nothing coward. I’m very sorry about this.”
Iyuri-san bent his head down in apology.
“It was also my fault for naively following him like that…ah! Speaking of that, before Iyuri-san saved me, I heard someone’s voice calling to me! So that person went and got help after all! Iyuri-san, tell me! Who was it? They’re my savior!”
It just came back to me, so I immediately spoke to Iyuri-san. But, his eyebrows drew together and he frowned.
“A few days before you were rescued, the mail service received a sealed envelope addressed to Solvay informing him that Ollie-san was at the bottom of the well. But, there was no sender’s name, and only Solvay’s name was written on the envelope, making it look suspicious. So, there was a delay in Solvay receiving the letter while the mail service confirmed the safety of the envelope.
“But the next day, they received another sealed envelope addressed to Solvay, but this time it was also addressed to me. And on top of that, there were dozens of letters. This wasn’t something the mail service could ignore, so they summoned Solvay, and he anxiously opened the letter on the spot. While confirming the contents of the letter, Solvay suddenly panicked and came to me. As soon as he did so, we both ran for the place you were trapped in. None of the letters had the sender’s name written in them.”
Iyuri-san told me this in a confused voice. An anonymous person? Someone who did all of this without leaving a trace?
“Of the people who knew that Ollie-san was in the well, at the time, there were the two candidates, and an assistant that the young master had brought with him, but on the day Ollie-san was rescued, that assistant resigned from the position and returned to his home village. If I were to suspect someone, it would be that person. We also received reports that he was regularly seen entering and exiting the post office.”
“Eh! Then, that person must be my savior! Where is he now?!”
“We found his name, and sent a summons on a fast horse to his village, but they haven’t returned yet. We did whatever research we could here, but haven’t found any information on where he could be. I’m very sorry.”
“Is that so… I wanted to thank him. Even though he was that idiot’s assistant, he still helped me.”
Iyuri-san gently stroked my shoulder. “He’s an important person who saved your life. We will continue the search,” he said.
“I don’t know where my savior is, but I’m glad to find out who he was. He cared about me, and risked his life to help me. I owe my thanks to him. I’m really grateful to him.”
I put my hand to my chest, and bowed my head. And then—
“If you ever find him, please let me know. I mean it… Then, I. Will. Be. Going home.”
With that said, I got up from the bed.
“Please wait! What are you saying!?” I was suddenly yelled at.
Eh? I’m… going home?
“Well, it’s Iyuri-san’s private room after all, right? The situation was urgent, so they brought me here at first, but as expected, in the end, it went too far . A lot of problems will pop up, and even though the candidacy period hasn’t ended yet, I’m going to withdraw from the list of candidates and go home.”
“It’s because it’s you that I brought you to my private room! There’s no way you can go home yet! You still have to stay and rest for a while until you recover! And what’s more, you finally admitted to liking me, so from now on, we can’t be separated so easily!”
I got scolded again. But unexpectedly, he kissed the back of my hand.
“Ollie-san, I want to hear that you like me from that charming mouth of yours. Could you please tell me that you like me?”
With the sound of fabric shifting, Iyuri moved to sit on the edge of the bed, looking at me pleadingly. Moo was also looking at me.
“I like Iyuri-san. I like you.”
Iyuri-san blushed and seemed to tremble with joy.
“Is it okay to say that, when you say that you like me, you mean it in the love way?” He asked in an affectionate tone.
“L-love?! …Eh—? Is it actually love? If Iyuri-san gives his attention to someone else, then I’ll get irritated, or, at least, I’ll feel uneasy… yeah, by liking you, I mean love. I like Iyuri-san as Iyuri-san.”
Iyuri-san kissed the back of my hand, and looked straight at me with eyes that immediately teared up.
“This kind of thing…something so happy, in my 38 years of living, it’s the first time I’ve experienced something like this. I’m so happy I could burst. I want to boast about this to the entire country, no, to the entire world.”
He was smiling widely, but looked like he was going to cry.
“Huh? That’s overexaggerating it.”
As I stroked Iyuri-san’s head, I could feel my own face starting to smile.
What should I do, I’m super happy. I’m so happy we understand each others’ feelings. With something so minor as “I like you,” Iyuri-san became so happy, and it makes him soo cute.
Iyuri-san’s face approached mine. Eh—!? This is—!?
Grrrrrowwwwwl.
N-No way, my stomach just growled so loudly.
“Gyaah! Sorry!” I panicked and pressed down on my stomach. I ruined the mood again. Please don’t look at me like this. Seriously, I’m so sorry.
“Fufufu, looks like a kiss on the lips will have to wait. They currently have a meal prepared. I’ll have them bring it up now.” In a good mood, he reached up to a cord hanging from the ceiling and gave it a few pulls. Was that a bell-pull2?
So we were going to kiss after all! My face quickly turned red. As I stared at him wide-eyed, Iyuri-san lightly pecked me on the lips. Hiii—! You said it would be for later! Y-you!!
Iyuri-san winked. “You let your guard down, didn’t you? You’re so cute,” he said, smiling.
What’s with this guy!? He’s so two-faced!!
I was going to give him a good punch in the stomach, but he intercepted my fist, saying, “You shouldn’t do that. You’ll irritate your injuries,” and kissed the back of my hand.
What the heck, this natural flirt. I’m pissed off, so let me give you a nose hook3.
Just as I was preparing my two fingers, Solvay-san came into the room with a pitcher of ice-cold water. Solvay-san… do you have some kind of sixth sense for when Iyuri-san is in danger?
The person in question, who didn’t know what was going on, seemed relieved to see me awake.
“If I may ask, how do you feel about eating something?” he inquired. As expected of the chamberlain. He understands without Iyuri-san having to say anything. Amazing.
“Aah, yes, please.” Iyuri-san responded, and Solvay-san said, “Of course, I will prepare it immediately,” as he placed the water pitcher and glass on a side table, bowed, and left the room.
Excuse me, even if it’s just bread and ham and cheese, I won’t complain.
“Ollie-san, drink some water.” Iyuri-san poured some water into the glass. My throat gurgled.
I tried to take the glass, but Iyuri-san held onto it, saying “I’ll help you drink,” while smiling.
“What’s with that? I can drink it myself.”
In an instant, Iyuri-san’s face went from being angry, to being dejected, and back to smiling.
“It’s hard to drink with your injured hand, though.”
“Eh? I usually drink with the other hand. If His Majesty the Emperor holds my glass to help me drink water, the young lady and the spoiled young master will definitely get me back for it. Now that I think of it, those guys have definitely noticed that I’m no longer there by now, right!? Just you wait, I’ll give them a good punch!!”
Iyuri-san, panicked, stopped me from getting off the bed. Don’t stop me!
“The two of them still haven’t noticed. Even if you don’t hit them, I’ll sanction them as punishment.” Iyuri-san was smiling, but had a terrifying expression on his face. His eyes weren’t blinking at all. Scary!
Sanctions? What were those? Ah, but before that, the water.
Iyuri-san devotedly helped me drink the water.
“Haa, puaaah. So refreshing. But, wait, before you sanction them, let me hit them 100 times.”
“Ollie-san, you went from one punch to one hundred. If you hit them 100 times, they’ll die.”
What’s with that!? You’re worried for me, but then you go and act like you’re on the side of the young lady and the spoiled young master? If that’s the case, I’ll be so disappointed.
I pouted at him, but then I thought I saw a demonic aura behind Iyuri-san.
“Such a lenient way of punishing them won’t work. They have to slowly suffer, more and more. Unless they experience for themselves all of the fear, pain, and suffering that Ollie-san had to go through at their hands, their ugly and rotten personalities will never be cured.” Iyuri-san said this all while smiling with his eyes closed.
Oi, oi, what kind of evil official is this? Ah, it’s an evil emperor, of course.
What are you intending to do? Certainly not kill them, right? Surely not torture, right? You can do that so easily, it scares me.
“Fine then, but first, after I finish eating, let me punch them once. Even if you stop me, I’ll definitely succeed once!”
There was anger rising up inside of me. It didn’t matter that my hand was injured. Or I could kick them. And then hit them with a pillow. Even if she was a young lady, I wouldn’t go easy on her!
As I was pondering this, Solvay-san came and brought in the meal.
“Solvay, I’ll handle it from here, so you can retire for the day. Thank you,” Iyuri-san said to Solvay-san.
“Understood,” Solvay-san said, and he placed the meal onto the side table and left the room.
It smells so good! Iyuri-san picked up a steaming hot bowl of soup and a spoon and turned to face me.
“You’re still recovering, so I’ll deliver the punch in your place. I don’t think I’ll be able to go easy on them, either.”
With a serious look on his face, Iyuri-san said, “Then, please open your mouth. Aaah-n,” as he scooped some soup up, blew on it to cool it down, and then brought it to my mouth. Reflexively, I closed my mouth around the spoon.
The vegetables were simmered until tender, and the soup broth was so tasty! The delicious feeling spread through my body, which before had been filled with nothing but bread and ham and cheese~.
I tried to eat by myself, but Iyuri-san wouldn’t let me have the spoon, saying something vague and nonsensical like, “This is my duty. Ollie-san only needs to open his mouth.”
It was as if I was a toddler.
Furthermore, if the upper class saw His Majesty the Emperor going “fuu—, fuu—,” wouldn’t their eyes pop out of their sockets?
Or should I say, is this your way of punching them?! You look like you have a lot of strength! One punch and they would die, for sure!
“For now, just let me punch them once. My uninjured hand feels fine, so I can use that. Afterwards, can I have some chili peppers? I’m going to make a paste that will disable their tastebuds for a while.”
Iyuri-san laughed and agreed, “If it’s just one punch. The chili peppers will be prepared soon,” while still feeding me the soup.
Then, after eating the soup for a while and then changing clothes, Solvay-san rushed back into the room. What happened? Is there an emergency?
“Your Majesty! The two candidates are- have arrived in- front of the main palace!!”
Eh? Those guys came?
What to do? Ah, but since they’re upper class, wouldn’t they normally go to the main palace?
Well, it’s fine, it’s perfect timing for their arrogant selves to show themselves. I’ll show you my power and go all-out.
As my determined right foot moved to step forward, Solvay-san said something impossible.
“Those two, have gone into heat!”
