Chapter 069 – Fufufu, Son. I’ll Entrusts the Rabbit to You [B]

After school, when everyone else headed off to their club activities, Rean volunteered to show Millium around the military academy.

Because of the penalty imposed on him for not attending that early period of school, helping out the student council as volunteer work, no longer applied, Rean basically had a lot of free time after school.

Millium seemed interested in the Cooking Club, but Rean didn’t feel like joining a club, after all this time. Even so, for Rean, who basically ran the Trista marathon whenever and wherever he wanted, it didn’t matter if he was helping out with student council or not, as his routine wouldn’t change.

Still, after seeing Towa, the student council president, working hard every day, Rean did feel like helping out, so he left a message that if they needed any help on a request, they could just drop it in his mailbox…… though the message was for the other members of the student council.

Rean knew that Towa would feel reserved and say how Rean didn’t have to help unnecessarily as it would only increase his burdens. Hence, Rean  told the people around her, who were worried about her, to consider requesting help from him instead.

In fact, although it was not as many as before, from time to time, he still received a few requests and he took care of them while showing Millium around.

After giving her a tour of the facility, Rean went up to the deserted rooftop to ask what was going on “behind the scene.”

“Hah~ this sounds like a really interesting place. I think I’ll be able to do pretty well in the student life here.” 1

“That’s good. By the way, Millium, have you been given any tips on how to finding the terrorists?”

“Hoeh? Ah~ I see, so Rean is my collaborator.”
“There is also Emma Millstein from the same class and Rosine from Class V too, but I’ll introduce them later. I’ll be serving as your support for most of the time, so feel free to ask me anything you want to know more about about the situation.”

“Hm, roger~ but I never thought I’d have someone help me with this investigation while undercover living a student life.”

“That’s my line. I never thought a girl like Millium would be part of the intelligence agency.”

“Heheh~ it’s amazing, right? Even though I look like this, I’m actually a part of the elite.”

Millium put her hands on her hips and puffed out her chest. Her appearance was the same as when she introduced herself and Airgetlam.

“Lammy’s self-introduction was influenced by Millium, huh.”

“Ah, so Rean should call it Lammy properly.”

“Nickname is a name to show intimacy, right? Well, I’m not sure if it’s okay for me to say it since we just met.”

“Oh, it’s okay, it’s okay. All of my acquaintances call Lammy by its official name Airgetlam, after all.”

“Haah~ that’s sad.”

“Right~ but I’m glad that Rean isn’t like that!”

With that said, Millium leapt up with her small frame toward Rean.

She really acts as young as she looks, thought Rean as she caught her, then put his hands under her arms and held her up high as he would do to a child.

“Uoh~ the view for this height feels fresh~”

“Up high up high~ well, such a thing usually won’t be done to someone once they’re past ten.”

“Hm, really? Then I guess I’m still within the tolerable range!”

Millium was smiling happily. Rean felt like she just said something weird, but perhaps she was surprisingly aware of her own mental age.

So Rean decided to spin her around on the spot just like he had done with Ymir’s children, making the ride resemble the Ferris wheel that was made famous by Mishelam, Crossbell.

Millium was surprised but seemed to be enjoying herself and it was shown in her smile.

“Hey, hey, Rean, do it to Lammy too!”

“Eh?”

Saying this, she raised her hand and the silver floating object called Airgetlam appeared on the roof.

Furthermore, under her command, she sent Airgetlam charging at Rean.

Airgetlam came flying. Since it was floating, it was unclear how much it actually weighed, but he deemed it dangerous to catch it directly.

So, Rean immediately shouted.

“Come, Loa Valimar!”

[“Oh!”]

A gray shadow instantly responded to the summons and leapt out from under Rean’s feet, blocking the charging Airgetlam.

Having witnessed the Power of Ashen up close, Millium panicked and clung to Rean.

“Uwawawawa, that, is it a ghost?!”

“Hmn…… pu…… puhah, no no, this is, well…… like what Lammy is to you. Its name is Valimar.”

Millium’s legs was wrapped around Rean’s waist, her body pressed against his body with her hands around his neck when Rean pulled Millium away, gasping for air.

After taking a breather, Rean explained about Valimar to Millium while admonishing her.

“Come on, Valimar. Say hello.”

[“Umu. My name is Valimar. Please take care of me, Millium.”]

“Uwah~ Rean got possessed~!”

Hearing the voice from his heart, Millium quickly moved away from Rean and stepped back.

But from her perspective, it would seem like her partner had been captured by Loa Valimar, so she couldn’t escape on her own, leaving her to groan as she looked back and forth between Rean and Loa Valimar.

“Oh, Millium, are you the type that doesn’t like ghosts? Don’t worry. Valimar may sound like a ghost at first glance, but it is actually just a personality residing in a knight doll called Ashen Knight.”

“If you’re possessed, it’s a ghost after allー!”

“Err~ well, you know, it’s something like a simple voice device among orbal machines, right? This is an evolved version of that.”

“R-Really?”

“Really, really. Come on, Valimar. Do it to Lammy too.”

[“Roger that.”]

With that said, Loa Valimar inserted its hands between Airgetlam’s arms and began to slowly spin it around, just like Rean had done with Millium earlier.

At first, Millium blinked blankly, but then her eyes lit up and she exclaimed “Ooh~” in excitement.

Rean thought that acting with sincerity was important.

“What exactly is a Divine Knight?”

“What? You haven’t heard of it? I thought Millium’s boss…… is supposed to be Gilliath Osborne, right?”

After taking a quick glance at Osbon, Rean spoke of his original objective…… his real father, the Chancellor of Blood and Iron.

Even without that, he would still show Millium around, but the reason he took the initiative to become friends with her was because he wanted to ask her about Osborne.

That said, the other party was an agent from the Intelligence Bureau. Rean thought she wouldn’t tell him easily but she readily confessed.

“Yeah, I received orders from oji-san, you see~ He did ask me to investigate the terrorist, but he also asked me to investigate the strange events at the Old Schoolhouse.”

“Strange events at Old Schoolhouse……? Did something like that happen?”

[“Fufufu, son. There’s no path to Valimar in the Old Schoolhouse in the beginning, right? The additional floors that were added after the school orientation was mysterious to outsiders.”]

Ah~ I see, the principal originally asked us to investigate the Old Schoolhouse as well. Since then, it has become the base of Schmidt’s Classroom so the post-change building has become the standard.

Rean and his group made extensive use of the Old Schoolhouse, which had been transformed, as an extracurricular activity for the Schmidt’s Classroom. This might be the reason for the difference in their perceptions.

Rean then explained the difference to Millium.

The strange phenomenon at the Old Schoolhouse was the result of the knight’s trial, the place where “Ashen,”  whose existence passed down in the Empire, slumbered.

Furthermore, the terrorist in question possessed a Divine Knight of another color, and it was possible that the “Noble Faction” also employed “Palatinate,” piloted by Rutger Claussell.

After he explained these things, Millium seemed impressed and praised him.

“Hoeh~ you’ve got a lot more information than us. I guess it is as expected of a collaborator.”

“Rather, I can’t help but wonder why you haven’t been informed of that beforehand.”

“The main order is to investigate the terrorists, after all~ Maybe they deemed it unnecessary. But I’m glad to know that Valimar isn’t a ghost.”

Rean had assumed the Intelligence Agency…… or rather, Osborne was an ally of Olivert, but was he wrong?

Rean felt the current Empire was divided into three factions of “Reformist Faction”, “Noble Faction”, and “Royalty Faction”.

[“Fufufu, son. The Chancellor of Blood and Iron might have only sent her here so she could enjoy life as a student. Of course, he probably gave nominal instructions.”]

Ah, I see…… He’s unexpectedly kind, considering his alias. Well, since he is the same person as dad, I guess that’s to be expected.

Rean didn’t know if his biological father, whom he had yet to meet, was the kind of person he guessed, but if that was the case, he would feel happy as his lips curled up in a smile.

As he did so, Millium took something out of his pocket.

It was an object that was supposed to be undergoing a test run by Class VII, ARCUS.

“Millium, that’s……”

“Hm, this? It’s the latest tactical orbment called ARCUS. Don’t Rean and others have one too?”

“Well, we have, but I never thought Millium would have one too.”

“Uhn, when I was informed to come here, I was told I have a high aptitude for it.”

ARCUS——All-Round Communication & Unison System was a tactical orbment.

It was the object that enabled the tactical link that Rean still used often. Considering that it was even possible to link with Loa Valimar, something suddenly occurred to Rean.

Hey, Valimar. Is it possible that if the other party is an ARCUS wielder, you can turn them into a Sub-Awakener?

{“Umu?”}

The feeling when I link with someone is similar to when Duvalie-san and Rosine piloted Valimar. I can also coordinate the Power of the Ashen with the link, so I think it might be possible for Fie to ride Valimar without receiving the Trial. That said, since Duvalie-san was able to pilot Divine Knight despite not having an ARCUS, ARCUS may not even be necessary.

Previously, when speaking to Jusis about the Divine Knight’s Trial, Fie stepped forward as a candidate.

As someone who had seen the Palatinate Divine Knight Zector first-hand, she probably knew that it was impossible to catch up with her father with half-hearted efforts.

That was why Rean thought it would be best to let Fie ride Valimar and chase after her father to her heart’s content.

{“Sub-Contractor must be someone Rean trusts…… someone who Rean thinks is worth lending me to them. In that sense, ARCUS basically allows you to feel the bond easier.”}

Valimar replied.

However, what was it in ARCUS that made it possible?

As Rean sank into a sea of thoughts, Millium pulled him out.

“Rather than that, Rean, let’s exchange contact information. It’ll be quicker if I ask things from Rean, after all.”

“Hm, aah, sorry…… okay, that’ll be fine. Has Millium received a detailed explanation about ARCUS?”

“It’s a tactical orbment with communication capabilities, right?”

“Ah~…… yes, that’s right.”

It seemed that she had received the same amount of information on ARCUS as the students of Class VII.

In that case, it might be quicker to ask the Epstein Foundation or Reinford, the company that developed it.

While Rean was thinking about this, Millium, who had determined that Valimar wasn’t a ghost, approached him.

“Hey, hey, Rean, do that to me too!”

“Huh?”

When he looked in the direction Millium pointed, he saw Loa Valimar playing with Airgetlam by juggling it.

Rean couldn’t understand what Airgetlam was saying, but seeing it uttered something in succession made it feel somewhat excited.

“Lammy looks like it’s having so much fun, so I want to try it too!”

“I don’t mind…… but please wear something under your skirt.”

“Eh, I don’t really mind, though?”

“I do mind.”

As Millium tried to pull up her skirt, Rean stopped her and called it indecent, then took off his uniform jacket and wrapped it around Millium’s waist.

Due to the difference of their body size, Rean’s jacket tightly covered Millium’s skirt down to her knees.

Rean dutifully followed Toval’s instruction back in North Ambria on how it would be best not to show the item retrieval via Osbon too much.

He did show it to Duvalie, but it was an emergency, so it was an exception.

“Keep your legs closed. Make sure to keep it like that while I do it to you.”

“Oka~y!”

As Millium enthusiastically raised her hand in response, Rean unleashed his power of ogre.

“Wawah, what is that, Rean!”

”You know how martial artists use their fighting spirit to boost themselves? It’s something similar to that.”

While claiming his power of ogre as something else, he easily juggled Millium just like what Valimar juggled Airgetlam.

Seeing Millium quickly turning her doubts into a smile and becoming excited, Rean smiled back, thinking that the school life from now on would be quite lifely.

That said, Millium not only stood out on the roof despite supposedly on an undercover investigation but also hit it off with Rean in just a single day, which made the rest of Class VII…… especially Emma who had a wry smile as she muttered “it seems like school life will become even more hectic from now on’, much to the sympathy of the rest of her classmates.

Author Note:

Abend Time, sometime after that.

Misty:

“Well, then, the next postcard is from the radio name Macky-san. It’s one of our regulars, thank you as always. Let’s see, it says ‘I want to give a gift to a classmate who has been constantly tired lately, but since she’s female, I don’t know what to give her to help her relieve her fatigue, so I’d like some advice from Misty-san’.

Okay, Macky-kun. I feel that your feelings are very much appreciated and respected by that classmate, but I think what you really need to do is to deal with the cause of her fatigue.
It’s a tough road that is difficult for most people, but a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Perhaps your actions might be able to deal with the cause of fatigue, but I want you to keep supporting her without giving up. If possible, group all your classmates together and let her rest——” 2

And so, her advice continued until the program director stopped her——
