Chapter 45 (Part 1)
We both went back to bed, waking up a few hours later, only a little bit later in the morning than when we usually did.
“Good morning, Nii-sama, Luca.” (Noel)
“Morning, Noel.” (Zagan)
“Morning, Noel. Morning, everyone.” (Luca)
“Morning! What a nice day to head out.” (Nina)
“Morning. Sleeping in today as well, huh?” (Miranda)
“G-good morning. I just finished getting breakfast ready. Please, everyone, have a seat.” (Bennet)
“Morning, Luca-kun, Zagan-kun. Ufufu, you’re being all chummy this morning.” (Cindy)
I nodded at the greetings that came one after the other and sat down. Camilla, who had already taken her seat, stared at me with her arms crossed. I wonder what was wrong?
Curious, I returned her gaze and she immediately opened her mouth.
“Don’t give me that worried look – it’s not that big of a deal. I’m just wondering what you plan on doing. Last time, when you lost consciousness, we took you in the carriage with us, but before that, you’d always move separately.”
It was very much like Camilla to keep in mind that I might be going to the next city on my own. Luca didn’t even consider the possibility that we wouldn’t be going together.
Miranda was the first to reply to Camilla’s words.
“Ah. I… don’t mind if we go together. The reason why you’ve been travelling separately is because of me, right?”
Well, Miranda being there was one of the reasons, since my presence would cause a rift in their circle of friends. At some point though, we’d started to spend more of our time together. If it was before, I would have thought that it’d be impossible for me to be a part of their circle.
“Miranda isn’t the only reason. There are people out there who attack dark attribute users just because of their attribute – like that noble woman. Also, there’s the thing with the Dark organization. With everyone around Zagan being against him, he had no choice but to choose to be alone, right? No matter how much he loved Luca. However, the circumstances have changed quite a bit.”
“W-we’ve become stronger. We can’t really protect Zagan-san, but we can have your back when you’re fighting.”
“Nii-sama, is it difficult for you… to go with us?”
I see. It wasn’t just Luca. Noel, and my friends – they wanted to be with me too.
Of course I’ll go with you – I wanted to tell them when all of a sudden the image of Luca from several hours ago popped into my mind and I had to hastily pull my hood up. I didn’t want the girls to see my red face.
But, because of that, I heard a sad voice calling out “Nii-sama…”
No, no, I’m going to go with you. I’m just feeling shy for some reason because of that earnest expression Luca had and his overly sweet confession.
That Luca, he laughed happily and hugged my waist.
“Don’t worry, Noel. I made sure that he’ll be going with us.”
“Really really. I did my best to persuade him. Right, Zagan?”
I nodded my head without lifting my face up, which made Noel happy. I felt like the others were also relieved. I’m glad this ended without any misunderstandings.
What Luca did at night felt more like seduction than persuasion, but I didn’t want to dig my own grave so I didn’t go out of my way to correct him.
While I still couldn’t bring myself to lift my face, Luca hugged me and rubbed his cheek against me.
“Aah. I can’t. It’s so cute when Zagan gets shy.”
“How… did you persuade him? I’m super curious~.”
“You can’t, Nina-chan. It’s not good to stick your nose into the affairs of lovers.”
“You two, you won’t be going around flirting on the carriage, right?”
Ugh, I want to dig a hole and bury myself in it.
We finished breakfast while I was still feeling shy, and everyone checked that they didn’t forget anything before leaving the mansion. Apparently, the landlord’s maids would do the tidying up.
That very same landlord was waiting outside the mansion with several escorts. Perhaps in order to see the prince off. He was the marquess who looked after the 10th city, Noel secretly told me.
Luca returned the key and the marquess walked us to the city gate. While walking, Luca put on the face of a prince, but the whole time one of his arms was wrapped around my waist. He even kissed me on top of my hood.
At night, he’d said that it was silly to worry about being same-sex partners, but was there really a need to show it off like this? Besides, all of this was making me feel embarrassed.
However, if I really thought about it, Luca came to the mansion carrying my unconscious body. He had probably been embracing me at the time. Naturally, the marquess guiding him to the mansion would have seen.
I really want to disappear right now…
Furthermore, the marquess was smiling and talking to Luca, paying me no mind. What a fearsome noble.
Exiting the gate, two horses were handed to us by a number of knights who were on standby.
Hmm, were they holding on to the horses?
In the game, the carriage appeared and disappeared out of nowhere; however, that wasn’t possible in reality. The horses also needed to be taken care of while we were inside the city. I’ve only realised this now.
Noel took the carriage out of her magic bag. Looking at it closely, the fabric and the roof-rack were both emblazoned with a small, royal coat of arms. The knights harnessed the horses to the carriage and with that our preparations were complete.
Nina and Bennett climbed up to the driver’s seat. Prompted by Luca, I stayed back. Then, starting from Noel, Miranda, Camilla, and Cindy got on one by one.
I was going to get on myself, but Luca’s hand wouldn’t let go of my waist.
This wasn’t the type of vehicle that you can help me get on like a lady in a carriage, you know?
Just as I was thinking that, he picked me up.
Eh? Hey. Wai-
Before I knew it, Luca had lifted me onto the carriage and climbed in himself.
“Now then, marquess, we’ve been in your care. Nina, let’s go.”
“Aye aye, captain! Let’s go~!”
The marquess and his entourage saw us off with a bow and we slowly set off, carriage swaying and horses clippety-clopping.
“Um, Nii-sama? Are you ok?”
“Huh? Why do you look so down, Zagan?”
I was hugging my knees and pulling at my hood when I heard Luca’s voice from overhead. Apparently he had shifted his gaze from the people seeing us off to the inside of the carriage. He immediately sat down and pulled me into his embrace, but I wouldn’t lift my head up. I could also hear an exasperated chuckle and a sigh.
“Luca. You, really. Obviously he feels like he can’t show his face when we all got on like normal while Zagan, a man, was lifted on.”
“Ahahaha. You picked him up like it was natural. That’s Luca for you.”
Guh, how embarrassing.
I have a feeling Luca’s been playing with me since the early morning. I just wished I could calm down somehow. Incidentally, I would also like to launch a counter-attack, but no matter how hard I try, I can’t act like Luca so I had no choice but to give up.
“Sorry, Zagan. I wasn’t paying attention. You were embarrassed, huh? It’s okay; we’ll be far away from the city soon. I’d like you to show me your beautiful face.”
That’s what I’m saying! Why are you spouting those lines?? Is it on purpose? Are you trying to make me feel shy on purpose?
Miranda and Camilla were even more exasperated and Noel was confused.
“Luca-kun, should I set up a small tent?”1
“Ah, yes. Please.”
With a faint ufufu from Cindy, I could feel signs of movement.
A few seconds later, Luca’s tentacles wrapped around my body, lifting me up while I was still hugging my knees. After another few seconds, I was dropped into Luca’s arms.
“Zagan, we’re inside a tent now so it’s safe to lift your head. I also put up a barrier, alright? It’s completely soundproof so they can’t hear your voice either.”
Certainly, I couldn’t sense the presence of the girls, so I risked timidly lifting my face up. We were really in a tent. It was rather narrow, but the tight space was helping me calm down.
“You’re red like a tomato. How cute.”
When I looked up at the low ceiling, he kissed me on the cheek and then rubbed his face on me the way he always did.
After a bit, my burning cheeks cooled down.
Having finally calmed down, I looked at Luca.
“Luca, that… please don’t pick me up when there are others around. It’s so embarrassing.”
Luca’s eyebrows drooped a bit when I told him that.
“Is it okay if it’s just a hug? How about kisses then? I’d be happy if you let me kiss you.”
“Well… if it’s just that, then I don’t mind.”
Hugs and kisses could be taken as a greeting, so I’ll allow them.
Luca exhaled in relief when I gave him my consent.
“Sorry, Zagan. I got a bit too ecstatic thinking that you’ll always be with me from now on. I’ll properly pay attention to my surroundings next time.”
I could easily understand. I was overjoyed as well. To be able to go around with Luca… and Noel and our friends; to loudly get ready with everyone; to ride on a carriage together, heading out to our next destination – how exciting was that!
I had always been alone. Because of my attribute, I lived while being rejected by those around me. But then I met Luca – a person who knew about my black hair, but still called out to me again and again. Together we fulfilled requests from the guild and, from time to time, went out on dates, though back then I wouldn’t have admitted that those were dates.
After connecting our bodies, our time together increased. I began to have conversations with Noel and, at some point, I made some friends.
I told Luca I loved him and made a promise to be together forever. It was the present that I wished for, together with him and my sister and my friends.
I’m… no longer alone. I can confidently say that now.
