Chapter 207: The Sage Cuts Down the False God

The golden tower split vertically.

The cut began to widen due to the tower’s weight.

Eventually it made a roaring noise and completely split in two.

As the dust danced, I kept a hand on the keepsake sword and observed.

Soon, a humanoid figure emerged from the cross section of the tower.

It had an ambiguous bodyline; it might have been a woman considering its proportions, but it had no eyes or mouth.

It had a golden hue, but it looked like a mud doll.

That humanoid turned its head towards me.

I didn’t feel any hostility; it merely stared at me.

I asked.

“You’re the false god, right?”

“—Why? This way, everyone could be happy.”

The false god muttered, ignoring my words.

It was the clear voice of a girl.

I felt something weird about her claim.

“Happy, you say?”

“—If everything, is one, then everyone, will always, be together. There’s no need, to fear, death.”1

The false god spoke intermittently.

It was her motive for taking people inside her.

“—Demon Lord, disturbed, us. Even though, I can save, everyone, with my methods.”

“Becoming your sustenance is definitely not salvation. They merely abandoned their lives.”

I casually denied her.

The false god shook her head.

“—That’s wrong. Everyone, is still alive. With me, they won’t die. They will have, eternal life.”

“I’m not talking about a physical matter, but a spiritual matter. Your actions insult the dignity of life.”

I felt self-hatred bloom as I argued.

How hypocritical was I to say these things despite the fact that I also turn people into undead?

It was none other than myself who also insulted the dignity of life.

Even so, I had to tell her.

The false god was mistaken.

I continue to insist on it as if telling myself as well.

“You must have devoured countless worlds in the past. Then, using the power you’ve gained by doing so, you devour yet another world.”

“—That’s, not it. I’m only, protecting, anxious lives. Everyone, is, happy.”

The false god trembled.

She embraced herself with both arms and began to whine pitifully.

I continued my words without minding that.

“So you prefer a state where their egos and emotions break down and mix with your existence?”

“—Death, is no good. Living, is fun. So, I’m not wrong.”

“I see. I understand what you mean.”

I cut the conversation there and relaxed my shoulders.

That was all for the argument.

Both of us should understand each other’s opinion with that.

No further debate was necessary.

Then I said,

“I admit. We’re the same. We’re both trying to save the people with our respective selfish assertions. We’re only different in ideas and our methods to achieve it.”

The core of our goal was basically the same.

We both had thoughts of saving others, and ran wild without care of morality in our methods.

We affirmed the madness within ourselves and tried to crush justices different from our ideal.

“We carry lives with us, more than what we can count. And we try to kill each other for the sake of those lives.”

I pointed the tip of the keepsake sword at the false god.

She was beyond the sword’s range, but that didn’t matter.

The distance between us could be covered in an instant.

I held onto that life.

“I shall take over the lives and the will you carry.”

“—No. I don’t want, to die. Death, is very, scary. Everyone, is scared.”

“I won’t let you get away. Just give it up.”

I transferred before the false god.

I swung my sword before she could react and cut her golden body diagonally.

Her upper body rolled to the ground.

Gray smoke overflowed from the cross section.

“—Ah, aaah.”

The golden tower was rapidly wilting.

The divine feeling and dignity it exuded disappeared without a trace.

It lost its brilliance and began to turn black.

The false god on the ground stretched out her arm.

Her hand failed to grasp anything.

She spun her words weakly.

“—This is, death. Everyone’s, life, is disappearing, and, gone.”

Her fleeting gaze swirled and caught mine.

She told me in a fading voice.

“—Please, don’t, forget.”

At the end of that word, the false god stopped moving.

Though she kept emitting smoke from the cross section.

Eventually, her body deflated to the point that it lost its shape and volume.

As I was convinced she died, I sheathed the keepsake sword.

“…”

The tentacles that were wriggling around were finally dead.

The emitting smoke was as widespread as a dense miasma.
I absorbed them all.

The power of the false god flowed in me.

I controlled it in my body and dominated it as my own.

The power of the beasts permeated through as a part of the Demon Lord.

—And with that, the long battle against the beasts of the outer world has finally ended.
