Chapter 85 – Fight – Toki
“Ah! Is back! Assam, welcome back!” I greeted Assam cheerfully, happy that I was able to pronounce the words so well.
“Toki… your words…”
Assam, who immediately noticed the difference, swallowed the rest of his words. The next moment, anger rose on his face.
“Huh?”
“Who did it?”
He stepped closer and grabbed my shoulders. His strong grip made me wince.
“Your Highness, please loosen your grip!”
“You… let Laham kiss you?”
“Ha? What are you saying?”
“You had Assist cast on you, right? By somebody who isn’t me!”
His blue eyes shook in anger. He still looked beautiful, but was he really doubting me right now? Did he really think Laham and I kissed?
“Your Highness, I-”
“Laham, back. Assam. I and Laham, didn’t kiss,” I said, looking straight at him.
Our eyes, however, did not meet. His eyes were looking right past me, his gaze focused on Laham. Assam… won’t look at me.
Still shocked, I turned around, grabbed Laham’s hand, and stood up.
“Toki-sama?”
Look straight ahead. With conviction. Don’t waver. Don’t cry. I told myself that as I faced forward and opened my mouth.
“I’m going back, to room,” I told Assam and started walking away.
Assam said nothing. I didn’t look back so I didn’t even know what kind of expression he had on his face.
I dragged my heavy feet and willed myself not to cry. Just hold on for a few seconds longer.
The rattling of my anklet sounded sad.
I opened the hidden door, stepped inside, and closed it.
“Toki-sama!”
I slid to the ground as if collapsing.
In a panic, Laham picked me up and carried me to the bed. He gently lowered me onto it and I looked up at him. There was a mixture of apology, regret, and anger on his face.
“Laham. I, don’t regret.”
“But-”
“Not to speak, is really painful. Want to say but cannot say, is lonely. To Assam, there was lots want to say…”
He might not listen to me anymore though. Ah, this is bad. I’m going to cry.
“Laham. I cry, so… leave alone?”
“Toki-sama didn’t do anything wrong… Are you angry with His Highness?”
“Angry… not. S-sa-ad…! Assam, didn’t… tr, ust m-me!!”
Saying it out loud, I couldn’t take it anymore. I pulled the blanket over my head and curled up into a ball. Laham patted me gently over the covers as if to soothe me. Next thing I knew, he was chanting a sleeping spell.
“! La, ham. Wait-”
By the time the words came out, it was already too late – my body was falling asleep. No… don’t sleep. The two of you can’t… fight…
The moment I was about to fall asleep, I turned the spirit sounds on.
I could hear anger, sadness, and regret. If it stays like this, Assam and Laham will fight. I have to stop them – was the last thought I had before I sank into unconsciousness.
